Beached in Brazil, but Never Far from the Vine
Leslie Sbrocco
Jul 24, 2007

Vacation to me means sitting on a beach and imbibing something other than wine. Brazilian beach life is all about mingling, so as we sipped coconut milk and caiparinhas (this Mojito-like cocktail made with limes, sugar and Brazilian rum named Cachaça is the country's signature drink) we slipped easily into surfside life.

New Zealand: A Regional Look at Kiwi Country
Leslie Sbrocco
Apr 17, 2007

New Zealand is a special place. Comprised of two islands--north and south--this small nation is home to majestic mountains, pristine beaches, and world class wines. From famous Sauvignon Blanc to rising stars such as Riesling and Pinot Noir, exploring New Zealand's wines should be on every wine lover's 'to do' list.

Chile's Emiliana Takes Organic, 'Bio' Mainstream
Leslie Sbrocco
Mar 6, 2007

My palate is picky. When you taste as much wine as I do over the course of a year, it takes something special to stand out. Recently, I came across a line of new wines from Chile that is worthy of attention.

How Long Will It Last? Testing Treatments for Leftover Wine
Leslie Sbrocco
Jan 9, 2007

One of the most common questions I get asked as a wine expert has to do with how long to keep an open bottle. If you're worried about the bottle going 'bad' before you finish it, you're not alone. According to a 2006 study by the California-based, Wine Market Council, this is one of the most widespread concerns among wine drinkers.

A Toast to My New 'Baby'
Leslie Sbrocco
Oct 17, 2006

I gave birth this week to a bouncing baby book...a nine-inch, half pound, soft-cover wonder. The birth certificate reads, "The Simple & Savvy Wine Guide." As my colleagues at Wine Review Online who have penned books before can tell you, it's not only a challenging task but a true labor of love (no pun intended).

Summer of Pinot Love
Leslie Sbrocco
Sep 5, 2006

While many people have been hanging out at the pool basking in the sunshine this summer, I've been a Pinot Noir pleasure seeker. Forget relaxing on the hammock and reading Danielle Steele, grilled wild salmon with a glass of silky, seductive Pinot is my idea of summertime indulgence.

Summer Sipping Made Simple
Leslie Sbrocco
Jun 27, 2006

It's official. Summertime has started and with that comes al fresco living. When it comes to wine to serve for cocktails or to a crowd, I recommend looking for solid producers who make enjoyable, affordable, and available wines.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars: Bottling the Test of Time
Leslie Sbrocco
May 30, 2006

Pioneers of modern-style California wine, Barbara and Warren Winiarski of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars shot to fame early on but have continued to lead by example.

The Buzz on Biodynamics
Leslie Sbrocco
May 2, 2006

Can a buried cow horn packed with manure help make better wine? What about a piece of bovine intestine loaded with chamomile flower heads? Will planting and harvesting grapes by the cycles of the moon increase the quality of the fruit? Adherents of biodynamics say yes. They believe that these techniques, among others, are the best way to achieve greatness in the bottle.

C.G. Di Arie: Telltale Signs of a Rising Star
Leslie Sbrocco
Apr 4, 2006

It was an interesting sight. There were 100 bottles of wine lined up on my kitchen counter with only a sip or two missing from each. That is, with the exception of one empty bottle. While researching my upcoming book, The Simple & Savvy Wine Guide, I regularly tasted dozens of bottles at a time to determine which ones would make the cut. After giving thumbs up or down to the whole lot, I'd invite friends and neighbors over to sip and share their thoughts with me. (Needless to say, I'm quite popular in the neighborhood.)

Wild West Whites...Aussie Style
Leslie Sbrocco
Mar 7, 2006

Had your fill of power-packed, muscle-bound Australian wines? To find elegant, European-styled versions from Down Under all you need to do is head west. I did exactly that recently, along with my Wine Review Online colleagues Robert Whitley and Michael Apstein, and what I discovered was impressive.

Sonoma's Simi Winery: Revving Up a Classic
Leslie Sbrocco
Feb 7, 2006

It seems only fitting that a man who has lived within view of Simi Winery for more than two decades should eventually be at the helm. Steve Reeder took over the winemaking reins of this historic property in 2003, after creating quite a buzz--and high scores--for his creations at Sonoma's Chateau St. Jean winery. He plans on doing it again at Simi.

Spain is IT in 2006
Leslie Sbrocco
Jan 10, 2006

Forget those over-achieving New Year's resolutions and focus on one you can actually fulfill: buying more Spanish wine in 2006. I've journeyed repeatedly to Spain over the past several years and each time I return bursting with excitement. This place is hot. If you haven't discovered the amazing wines from the anchor of the Iberian Peninsula, get revved up and ready.
